The Cause

The locks and chains that have kept us safe are rusting away, due to better communication and better access to knowledge. The walls themselves are bowing out and threatening to collapse. A stout shove is all it takes to topple most of them, now.

In this light, the perpetual disapproval of ‘permissive’ society is seen for what it is: an attempt to recruit more soldiers to guard the ramparts; to get more minds to respect the boundaries, thereby making them stronger.

There are very few people left to disapprove of you. Whether you’re ready or not, you have to work out what’s good and bad for yourself.

You’re a little ashamed that you sometimes wish there were more rules and enforcers, aren’t you.

Those of us for whom the terror of mental freedom is preferable to the comfort of psychic slavery, are vaguely aware of other boundaries far in the distance, behind the shattered walls and blown out doors of the old prisons we have destroyed.

We are all too likely to opine, “Those distant barriers will have to come down eventually, but there is much to explore here, first. I doubt I will chafe at these new restrictions, being as they are so distant,”

“Time enough to act when it does begin to irritate,” we are also wont to say.

How foolish we are to think so.

A bond is a bond, no matter how little it is felt. The need to go beyond will become unbearable soon rather than late.

What the hell am I talking about, anyway?

What barriers are left?

You don’t mean *gasp!* legal ones, do you?!

No, of course not! Like most barriers, we are largely ignoring those, anyway.

I mean other types of laws like gravity, time, the laws of thermodynamics.
